Garey Park (Georgetown)

March 30, 2020

Garey Park is a massive park in Georgetown that offers myriad outdoor activities. A playground, splash pad, dog park, horses, fishing ponds, hiking trails, river access, and more can be found at this gem of a park in the greater Austin area.

We have only been to the Play Ranch and the hiking trails/river access parts of this enormous park. There is so much more to discover here, but this post will only reflect those parts we’ve seen up close.

Ziplining at Garey Park

The playground has a very large covered pavilion area filled with picnic tables. The bathrooms are near the pavilions. There are separate climbing and slide structures for both younger and older kids to play. There are 3 zip lines, which were my kids’ favorite part. My kids (10, 7 and 2) spent most of their time riding the zip lines, but also enjoyed all the other parts of this enormous playground. My big boys loved taking turns on the double swings with their 2-year-old brother. We spent hours here and would have stayed even longer had I brought our lunch.

We spent some time on one of the hiking trails here on another day. To access the trail that leads down to the San Gabriel River, you drive past the gatehouse and keep going straight, all the way until you pass the Garey House and hit the end of the road. Park near the restrooms and walk through the tiny gate. Both trails there will take you to the river. There are grassy hills perfect for a peaceful picnic. There are rocky river banks that are calling you to find the perfect, smooth, flat skipping stone. You can see tadpoles and minnows and frogs in the water.

If you choose to keep hiking, this trail will loop back around to the beginning. It is called the Meadow Loop Trail. You may even be sharing the trail with someone riding a horse if you’re lucky!

Austin Active Kids Opinion

We plan to go back and explore more of this majestic park in the future. It is easily becoming one of our favorite places near Austin. There is truly something for everybody here!

Outing Time

Have I mentioned how big this place is? You could easily spend an entire day here and still not see it all! If you plan on just going to one section, you should plan on staying at least a couple of hours.

This park is only free on Tuesdays. Otherwise, they charge $5 resident/$10 non-resident (up to 2 people). Additional car passengers are $2 per person. Children 3 and under are free. Cash, checks, and credit cards are accepted.
